Seattle, USA – Monday 13 November, 2000

Another fine day, and for many of the party, their last chance to shop for gifts and souvenirs before returning to Australia, and shop they do. Michael Johnston finds a very nice line in bed and bath linen to take back in his hand luggage. I choose to do a tour of the Boeing factory in Everett, 30 miles north of Seattle. We can probably all reel off the statistics and have a sense of the size of these aircraft from when we see them at airports and travel in them, but seeing six of them on the production line simultaneously, in various stages of manufacture, was eye-popping and utterly fascinating. The factory that is visited by the tour is the one that produces all the wide bodied Boeing models, including the 747s. Other models are built at another factory south of the city.
