Seafood and a secret nightspot in Singpore

Monday 29 June 2015 – Singapore

I needed to visit the Seacare hotel as I’d managed to leave my jacket there earlier in the month (actually not a bad strategy to save carrying warm clothes around in the tropics). A subsequent stroll through Chinatown then to Raffles City for a late breakfast/early lunch. A swim at the Hotel pool then a wander up Orchard Road to try and buy some underwear that fits.

After a rest and a shave, I caught a cab to the East Coast at Koetong to meet up with Pete Smith and Allan Nicholls who are staying with their Aussie expat friend Stephen in a condo there. A very large G&T and a good chat, then we headed to the East Coast Seafood Centre for Chilli Crab and Black Pepper Crab, that classic Singapore dish, eaten by the sea.

Later Stephen suggested we head back to the city for a cocktail at the Desire Bar, an incredible art deco-style place in the atrium of Parkview Square near Bugis Station. Incredible, it has a three-story wine fridge. When somebody orders a bottle, the ‘Wine Angel’ straps herself into a harness and flies up to get it- quite a spectacle.

I was surprised that I’d never heard of this place and that there were not many people inside, and that we were even allowed in, casually dressed as we were in t-shirts and thongs. Stephen said the building was home to a lot of embassies and consulates and the management didn’t want publicity for privacy and security reasons. Photos are not allowed during the day when the space hosts a lot of meetings, but by night we were able to snap away. There are also few online references to it – an indication of the value placed on privacy. But a wonderful conclusion to this Asian odyssey.
