Koh Samui, Thailand
10 July, 2001
Dear Mum & Dad, I’m currently in Thailand, on the island resort of Ko Samui, having traveled overland from Kuala Lumpur to get here. The overnight express train from KL to the Thai border was fine – not fast, but it was OK. On board I met up with an American who was also heading to Ko Samui, so we fell in and have been travelling together, which has been great. The bit after the train was interesting. We caught a minibus from Hat Yai to Surat Thani (four hours), and were due to transfer to the six pm ferry to Samui. However they only had one minibus going and we got left behind as it was full! needless to say there were harsh words!
Anyway, we ended up on the night ferry and arrived at Samui at 5.30 this morning after two days and a night in transit, very tired and in desperate need of a shower. However things looked up after that – we got the last two bungalows at a decent price right in the center of Chewang, the main beach area. After a short snooze, we went out and organised everything – our tickets to Bangkok, our diving excursions, I ordered two suits to be made up here, and then we went and hired motor scooters and spent the afternoon riding around the island.
I’ve never ridden a scooter before, except dinking on the back (and that’s another story). Anyway, Samui is great, the company is fine and I’m having more fun than I’ve had in ages. Have also been swimming twice, done some sightseeing and had a very decent Thai meal. Going to Bangkok on Saturday, then back to Singapore on Tuesday. Will be coming home shortly thereafter, probably within a week depending on flights etc. Will let you know certainly as soon as I know. Hope all’s well with you and everyone.
Cheers and lots of love, Andrew
