Sunday 20 May 2001 – Jurong Bird Park, Singapore
Arranged to meet Owen and visit Jurong Bird Park today, just to be a complete tourist. It was an extremely hot day and doubly so wandering around in the sunshine. I found the bird park to be a bit touristy and some of the cages very cramped, but on the other hand, I’ve never seen hummingbirds or macaws as close as here before.
After lunch we watched one of the ‘shows’ that run constantly at the park – this one about the Birds of Prey. Some vultures, eagles, secretary birds and others were trained to fly in close proximity to the audience and perform ‘tricks’ in return for food. It was quite well done, and again whilst I wasn’t comfortable with the treatment of wild animals, I’ve never seen these birds this closely before.
